New Delhi : Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has expressed displeasure over the batting of Test team vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane. Manjrekar has said that Manjrekar’s batting is not in line with expectation. He said that Rahane’s batting these days does not give the kind of protection to the team which the team expects from them. Rahane was dismissed for 27 in the first innings of the Ahmedabad Test against England. Manjrekar said that there is a lack of confidence in Rahane. Whenever I see him batting in recent times, I see that his confidence as a batsman is weak and he feels insecure. For some time, there has been a shortage in his batting.
The former batsman said that Rahane had come out to bat with aggressive thinking in the fourth Test against England. He has been batting in the same manner for the last three-four years. There have been many times when he has played all these shots. However, on the second day of the Ahmedabad Test, he played many shots in which he did not appear to be completely in control. It is true that he scored 27 runs fast, but the players watching his batting sitting in the dressing room may not have gained confidence from this innings.
Rahane was dismissed for 27 off 45 balls in the first innings. He was caught by James Anderson with Ben Stokes standing in the second slip off his outgoing ball. Rahane’s bat has been silent since playing a match-winning innings of 112 runs in the Melbourne Test of Australia tour last year. He has not played a big innings. He has scored fifty runs only once in the last 11 innings.
